Senior Physical (Secondary)Metallurgist
Background
Our client requires a senior physical metallurgist at their office in New South Wales, Australia.
In general the successful candidate needs to be skilled in high pressure and high temperature steam applications of superheated tube boilers and axial steam turbines. These boilers operate at approximately 165 b pressure and around the 540 degree Celsius temperature range. Most of the plant that falls within the marketing target area was built around the late ‘70’s to the mid ‘90’s. The cost of replacing this plant is prohibitive. The operators of this plant have two primary objectives – firstly to extend the life of the plant (LIFEX) and secondly to upgrade the capacity of the existing plant. In addition they are coming under pressure from the Emissions Trading Scheme that is soon to be implemented. That being the case, the employer requires the successful candidate to consult to the plant operators to achieve these aims.
The operators and plant of which we speak are: • Operator 1: operate (4 x 660 MWe) and (4 x 500 MWe) stations • Operator 2: operate (2 x 660 MWe) and (2 x 660 MWe), plus (2 x 350) MWe and (2 x 500 MWe) stations • Operator 3: operates a 4 x 660 MWe station In the main the OEM’s of the boilers are IHI and that of the turbines are Toshiba.
The Successful Candidate
The successful candidate should have more of a technical bias than a sales bias because it is anticipated that a sales manager will be recruited to compliment this role. It is anticipated that this successful candidate will have several staff members reporting to them and as such some management experience would be desirable. It is also anticipated that the employer will set up a metallurgical laboratory at this site and as such the successful candidate would preferably have some knowledge of the setup of such a laboratory.
The successful candidate must be fluent in English and have a minimum of 10 years experience. It is preferable but not critical that the immediate past experience be in the power industry. Some travel on the part of the candidate will be required. Identifying, analysing and solving problems will form a normal part of the successful candidate’s working day.
A strong interest in science and technology is naturally a prerequisite.
Good organisational and communication skills will help the successful candidate work alongside other professionals, such as mining or construction engineers, geologists, trades people and process operators.
The Brief
The Employer is a mid to large consultancy to the power generation industry in Australia. They are also developers of their own technology which they sell to the industry. The employer requires a senior physical metallurgist to consult to their clients. The successful candidate would travel to client’s sites regularly. The successful candidate would use their existing skills and knowledge of metallurgy to assist the clients of the employer to make their decisions.
